September 11: Canoe carts are the bee’s knees, the cat’s meow… and cool bananas (according to Dad).
After a drizzly morning of gear rearrangement and waiting for other parties to arrive, we completed orientation and weigh-in by just after noon and began our first portage (when the joyous acceptance of canoe carts was first realized). These two-wheeled carts strapped to the bottom of the canoe allowed us to wheel the canoe (and 60 lb of cargo) along the 2.4km portage path to Kibbee Lake, carrying the surplus (30 lb) in a backpack, and NOT carrying the canoe through the woods. Our adventure is already exponentially better because of this.
Today’s travel itinerary included our two longest portages, and two relatively short paddles with intermittent showers and sunshine sprinkled throughout.
After camp pitch, beating Dad at bocce ball (he had more points, but I still declared myself winner), supper and fireside conversation, we now retire to our tents to fall asleep to the call of loons.
Life on the lakes is pretty ok 🙂
