September 13: Day 3 of the Tarp-again Traverse
Today was not a cake walk, nor a walk in the park. The rain showers of the evening hung on through the early morning, clouds just beginning to break when we set to paddling around 9:30. The wind hadn’t shifted directions during the night, so we had 16 km to go into a headwind. We pulled off at a gravelly point for a lunch refueling point after two hours battling the wind and waves, a few breaking over the bow of our canoe and into my lap. Good thing, too; my bird bath this morning focused on face and arms, this took care of the lower body. Now I’m super fresh! π
After lunch (I was ravenous, eating ΒΌ cucumber, 3 oz cheddar, 2 oz jerky, a Clif bar, 2 pieces of rye bread, an energy cookie, and a handful of M&Ms. Oops), we paddled another hour to our campsite on the shore of Isaac Lake – familiar, because this is night 2 of 3 on the shores of Isaac – setting up camp and a 300-foot web of overhead guylines to drape wet tent flies and tarps over us to protect against the next onslaught of rain. So far today has been windy and dry, but the weatherman says tomorrow won’t be; we’re thoroughly enjoying dry for now!!
