We arrived under cover of darkness, peering through rain-streaked windows to view the city under the street lights’ blueish haze as our volunteer coordinator, Rafael, drove us through puddles of various sizes and depths on our way to El Sauce neighborhood. We were greeted at the curb under cover of umbrella by our jovial host, Fannia, as she guided us into the home she shares with her mother, Doña Argentina. After showing us our rooms, she served warm baleadas, the national dish of flour tortillas with beans and cheese – we all took two. 😋 After a course of ginger & cinnamon tea, we unpacked and joyously reclined onto our beds, where I tossed and turned and had crazy visions of water backing up into the shower and causing the toilet to flush. Morning clarity revealed that rain falling off the eaves sounds a lot like a shower, and roommates flush the toilet after they use it in the wee hours – who knew?
